P52 | Week 3 “Favorite”

Favorite - Edwardsville Photographer

As many of my readers know I am participating in a personal project with some other photographers. Each week we have a new topic and have one week to take a photograph that matches the subject matter. This week our topic was “Favorite.” It could be anything, a favorite person, place, thing, anything!

I found this week to be extremely difficult. I love so many things, how could I narrow that down to one image? How do I choose? All week I put off this assignment while other photographers in our group started posting images and writing about how much easier this week was. Sunday we had unseasonably warm temperatures in Edwardsville. So I grabbed my two boys, my sister, and my camera and headed for the park.

We got many great shots that day, photos of the boys playing individually and together. They even sat with Aunt D’Anne for a few. Later that night when downloading the images and trying to choose a favorite, I was again stumped! Each photograph was great for it’s own reasons. Maybe it was a first accomplishment on the playground, a funny expression while they were playing, or just because.

It’s down to the wire now for the deadline and I am forced to make a choice. This image is my favorite of the day. Not because it is my favorite child, location or day. But, because my oldest son Jack has been going through this phase where he doesn’t like to look at the camera with a genuine smile. It has been months since I have been able to get a real smile from him. Normally he grits his teeth, or sticks his tongue out, or does some other awkward expression because he thinks it is hilarious! At this particular moment, I scoped out a nice shade patch to photograph him in and got him to jump in place. Then voila, there it was, my FAVORITE SMILE!

  1. I love your favorite shot! My oldest is exactly the same way - taking his picture requires a lot of stealth.

  2. I think my 2 year old has begun that phase a bit, but you captured a great smile in that shot.

  3. Such a great story and a great smile. You got a good one there!

  4. Despite his jumping you composed it so well! I struggle with action shots.

  5. It doesn’t even look like he is jumping!

  6. I can see why it’s your favorite smile…super cute! I can totally relate to going months between real smiles when photographing my daughter…those few real smiles are so precious!

  7. What a cutie pie! I may have to steal your trick to get a smile out of my little guy soon!
